Entering the Delta

The river has a mind of its own and its history has found it chopping and changing course and eventually forming into the Hooghly. Just as holy as the Ganges and sometimes interchanged in name.

As we travelled down we saw temples along the riverbank. This one overly pink with oversized statues of local personalities. Further down an army cantonment called Barrackpore where the first martyr of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 Mangal Pandey was hanged.

Soon the view of the famous Howrah Bridge in the distance.

As we approached to go under the noise level grew. We are reaching the end of the peaceful cruising and entering a bustling, honking, crumbling Kolkata preparing for the Durga Puja festival.

As we passed under the bridge the light faded and I look back to see the bridge all lit up. The bit in the middle appears unlit indicating some faulty Indian connections !
