Sogetsu Ikebana

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging and Sogetsu Ikebana is the modern form, created in Japan by Sofu Teshigahara. His grand daughter Akane Teshigahara is the fourth and current Sogetsu iemoto (grandmaster) and is based in Tokyo.

Sogetsu Ikebana was introduced to Australia by Norman Sparnon who studied it under the great Sofu Teshigahara. The Sogetsu Ikebana Queensland branch has been active for over 60 years and you can join the Friends of Ikebana Group for free. Every year they exhibit at the Botanic Gardens and I look forward to my visit.

This was a group exhibit and I bent down to see what materials were used. They are the dried skins of oranges and citrus fruit and there was such a beautiful scent that came from them.

From fronds, to dried wood, chilies and eggshells to gum nuts, everything was balanced and conveyed the calmness and care with which these pieces are put together.

And this one was the supreme balancing act!
