A fond farewell

It’s been raining a lot. Today the sun is out, so I pack my books and head to the Fridge Library and Civosity Park walking along Ithaka Creek.

I have done this walk hundreds of times. Each time it is different – as is the case today. I will share the joyful finds but also the sad news. Civosity Park is closing and a Closing party will be held tomorrow at the park. Everyone is welcome. Many local writers, including myself, have written about Civosity, a park created by David, the owner of the corner house. Over ten years he pulled down fences and opened up his back garden to the whole community. He created seating areas, a playhouse for the kids, giant mushrooms and a giant Connect -and that was the aim of his game. Connecting people to their surrounds, the kids to the bushland and their imagination, and occasional passers by to a place of quiet solitude under the trees to read a book or sit in silence.

He is selling the house. The new owners may respect his life work or may put up fences and keep the back garden for their own private use. That is to be seen.

I open the Fridge Library and tidy it as I always do, taking a book and leaving several. I ask David anxiously – will the Fridge Library go too? Hopefully not as it is on Council land. Again we shall have to wait and see.

So I shall go along tomorrow and give my thanks to David for all he has done for this community and wish him the very best for the future.

As we chat I say “well I guess life must go on” and he replies

“A door has to close before another opens.”

Wishing him many open doors of creativity as he moves to his next home.

My walk – glorious as usual and full of finds. Here are some.
