Yamdena Island

After a sea day crossing the Timor Sea we have arrived in Yamdena, the largest island in the Tanimbar Islands of Indonesia. Saumlaki, the largest town is on the southern tip of the island.

Early morning in the Timor Sea

We went to shore on our Xplorers. A colourful wharf.

Saumlaki wharf

Off to Tumbur. A village some 30 mins away where we were greeted by the chief and a dancing group. He gave a speech and an offering of rice wine and betel. The women wore headdresses with birds of paradise.

The women dancing, the men drumming.

Children greeted us from the local school.

The local school gathered to greet us.
The bird of paradise clearly visible from the back. Hope they stop killing them tho !

We wandered the streets, interacted with the children, a little boy called Jan, super smart adopted me !

Little Jan(6) super intelligent and inquisitive
At the local market.

We saw local carvers and weavers of the intricate ikat at work.

Copra drying in the sun.

They rely on fishing, agriculture and farming and occasional visits from cruising boats. They could not have been more welcoming.

    1. Fran, I have you to thank – it was seamless today and so quick. Not perfect as I am still exploring the mobile app but SO much better than waiting endlessly for pictures to download in poor connectivity. x M
