Not in my beloved adopted homeland but in the country of my birth, my troubled island of Cyprus where fires broke out near the foothills of Limassol ravaging vineyards, farmyards and backyards, burning through houses and treasured belongings, threatening lives and causing whole villages to flee in terror before they are engulfed. I can’t imagine the fear and the smell of burning, let alone the loss of homes, lives, beloved pets and memories.

On my walk a subconscious pull to those colours and images which fan the flames and render the outcome black with soot and white with ash.

Days and months go by as we are lulled into inaction and then abruptly reminded of our need to protect ourselves and our planet from floods and fires and cataclysmic events. Allegations are rife of how the fires started and how they may have been deliberate. How and why anyone would do so is beyond me. Recriminations and responsibilities are also shouldered and then shifted and I wonder how many more we will see before we wake up to what we must do to protect ourselves and the planet.
