The Birds, the bees and Tetra Paks

Walking into the Gallery of Modern Art I am intrigued with their latest exhibition which is called Wonderstruck. More about that another time. Today I am concentrating on one artist and one work of art on display which absolutely caught my fancy. Here it is in its entirety. Come in a little closer.

Her name is Madeleine Kelly and she made a series called “Spectra of Birds” from repurposed Tetra Pak containers. We all have them in our fridge don’t we? I also liked her play on words.

She mixes pigment with molten beeswax which she then applies to the containers and shapes them and as the molten beeswax solidifies she can transform them into familiar birds. Its playful, inventive and a great use of recycled materials. -and beeswax is involved too !

See if you can identify them independently – easier for those more familiar with Aussie birds but doable by anyone really.

The very annoying Noisy miner – he is almost grinning at us.
The elegant and melodic Magpie
My absolute favourite the Laughing kookaburra
Crimson Rosella, Satin Bowerbird and a spotted Pardalote ( spots a dead giveway!)
Another favourite – a perfect representation of a Tawny Frogmouth.

I just loved the playfulness of this small but impressive series and of course it feeds right into some loves of mine.
