The Lacepedes

Errol mercifully fizzled and headed off in a different direction. So we set off from Broome into the vast blue ocean.

Blink and you would miss them. Four tiny islands off the northern coast of Australia- now an A class nature reserve and what a joy. Thousands of boobies, some already with their chicks enjoying the protection of this reserve – no one can walk on it.

Four small islands, coarse sand and coral rubble, lying atop a platform of a coral reef. Named after a French explorer.

They support the breeding colony of brown boobies, of up to 18,000 breeding pairs, possibly the largest in the world. Up to 20,000 roseate terns have been recorded here. We saw green turtles doing a double decker. I will leave that to your imagination, and some boobies were also engaging in fun activities on top of a rock. They stopped when they saw us. Its the end of the wet season and breeding is underway.

Well almost – as we were leaving we spotted a massive croc up on the shore with his mouth open, trying to keep cool but also probably eyeing up what delicacy he might enjoy for his dinner. So much to choose from.
