Ziggy is a baby Zebra. He is about three months old. He came to eat lucerne ( they supplement some food for the animals in the dry season ) with his mum and dad and Christine noticed he was limping. She called the vet and he came to remove a wire from his leg which was part of the snare. Poaching is still rife in South Africa, though the authorities are doing a lot to combat it. Ziggy lost his bandage and his sore was exposed so the vet had to be called back in. He successfully darted him and we all rushed to where he had fallen to rest him on a tarp and watch as Pete, the dedicated wild animal vet from the nearest town, cleaned out his wound, stitched him back up and bandaged him all over again.

Caring for wildlife is a big responsibility. Christine is deeply committed to all the animals in her nature reserve, they count them and care for them. Pete is a frequent visitor to the property and on this occasion he waived all his professional fees to care for Ziggy. It took nearly two hours for the whole process with a team of several people from the vet practice and the use of many medicines and antibiotics.
Thank goodness for such dedicated animal carers.
We wish Ziggy a full recovery and hopefully might be able to bring you an update soon.
