EKKA

It’s a bit of a pilgrimage and this year is the first year I have not been a volunteer. Apparently we are no longer needed. So ticket on mobile off we went to explore with Robyn. She had not visited since her children were young. According to her not much has changed and I can believe that. And yet it always holds my interest, the people collecting their showbags, the country feel, bulls and horses showing off in the main arena, the amazing creations of the country women whether in cakes, knits or quilts. More of that tomorrow.

There is a lovely tacky side to the show as well. Those stomach churning rides. The stalls with the fuzzy animals you can win. I have yet to taste a dagwood dog – a treat for when I am older ! After the pandemic the show is back bigger and better. We loved the animals, the chooks and roosters, the massive cows and bulls, the elegant horses. My favourite photo, a young girl stroking his head in his pen.

A representation of the world cup in oranges and lemons and potatoey teams. Genius – such fun.

The Amazing Aechmea – or Blue Tango – a stunner !

The grading of the fleeces and the wool being spun by a lovely lady in a felt hat. She showed us how Cinderella pricked her finger.

Finally for today the amazing chooks and roosters – They were crowing like there was no tomorrow so we should head their advice and live loud.

I’ve always loved the Ekka. And I think there has been so much change over the years. A little less country – the animals don’t tend to stay there as long. I used to take school groups & Steve was on the RNA Council there for several years so I got to reorganise and run the schools section. It was a big commitment! Plus all the social side of things. I’m sorry I’m missing this year.

    1. Had no idea you were both so involved and would love to hear more when you are back. Yes you may have missed it this year but Hadrians wall and the Edinburgh Festival good alternatives that is for sure ! x M
