Talbot Bay and Cyclone Creek, leading to Horizontal Falls.

We cruised into Talbot Bay through some beautiful sandstone formations but there was a lot more to come. We anchored for the night and enjoyed a BBQ on the top deck with a Bilby commemorating Easter coming out in Cloud formation – it is the Easter Holiday after all.

We explored the Horizontal Falls this morning and took a good look at the two gaps through the rocks. I could never quite understand how falls could be horizontal but I do now. The sediments in the rocks are varied. Some weather and some don’t. The weathered one caused the gaps in the rocks. Given that the Kimberley has one of the greatest tide changes in the world twice a day the tide can drop and build some 10 metres – and this pushes the water through the small gaps in huge volumes causing the effect of a fall – but on a horizontal level. We took exhilarating rides through the falls.

The entrance to the Falls.

We also cruised down Cyclone Creek early morning to catch the sun on the rocks and the reflections in the green turquoise waters.

The rock formations – some sandstone, some bauxite and metamorphosed were amazing -our resident geologist tells us that the rocks have a clock and can be measured in terms of time – and these are about 1.8 billion years old. Thats a lot of years for the rocks to form the way we see them today. Some layered like bricks one on top of the other, then forces and pressures pushing them vertical and vertiginous. We saw lasagna layers as Cara our expedition leader calls them and Pentacostal Sandstone forming the most majestic backdrops to the landscape.

Oyster shells and other marine life on the tide line.

A short eared rock wallaby came out to say hello, a Brahmini kite flew above and very orange fiddler crab lay on the muddy banks ready to be picked by birds of prey. Mistletoe hung in trees, ghostly gums seem to grow out of the rocks.
