Sun bears

I didn’t know the first thing about them, but as it turns out they are more endangered then the orangutans. Part of the problem as Dr Wong explained is that there is no data on them and without data they cant be classified as endangered. So if there are any young researchers and nature lovers out there willing to investigate them further here is the link you need https://www.bsbcc.org.my/home

We met Dr Wong, the founder of the Centre who took time out of his busy day to show us around. I have rarely met someone so driven- he actually took over a sanctuary that used to be for the now extinct Bornean Rhino. He is determined that the Sun Bear will not suffer the same fate.

Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. They are called Sun bears because of the bright yellow band they have on their chest. They are threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade.

There are currently 43 rescued ex-captive sun bears at the Centre and we walked around and heard individual stories about some of them. The bears live in a large forest enclosure where they are looked after and rehabilitated back into the wild.

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world.  It was founded in Sabah, Malaysia in 2008.

Volunteers, donations and support are all warmly welcome. Can you name your bears, except the ones in the sunglasses!
