I left Famagusta on the southern coast of Cyprus with the clothes I was wearing and never went back as a result of the Turkish invasion of 1974. I can view my home from a distance but the town remains a ghost town with some recent disturbing openings by the so- called Turkish administration to dark tourism.

When I visit Nicosia, the capital, I know I am in a divided capital – with the beautiful Venetian walls of the city literally cut in half.

Famagusta Gate which my sister helped restore.

I cross the border with ease – one of the reasons perhaps that there is little pressure to solve the problem. Below photos from both parts. The lives behind the doors are similar in so many respects. The politics keep the doors shut. Politicians who have been elected on a message of a solution do nothing to promote unity, a single identity and common goals.

We wander through the city which is sweltering and find a place for a fresh orange juice. Its called XΑΛΑΡΑ meaning LAID BACK. I guess you have to be to ignore the political failings. On the wall a significant figure of the city.

He could roam freely !
