National Eucalyptus Day

It is National Eucalyptus Day so we headed to Mount Coot- Tha for a day of talks, walks and workshops. We heard about the many types, admired their smooth trunk, or spotted ones, listened to how we can dye cloth using the leaves and heard all about powerful owls nesting in old eucalypt hollows and how important they are to these magnificent birds.

My best mezze moment was a simple workshop to make gum flowers – here it is. You need a cut out egg carton, wool in different colours, a pompom frame to wrap your wool around and some colourful beads to fix on the bottom. Now isn’t this just lovely?

Just so you can appreciate how utterly beautiful the real gum nuts are here is a selection, some growing round the corner, others a little further. Endless variety and colours, shapes and sizes.

Then a stroll through the Botanical gardens. They never disappoint.

And what is this we see ?? Look closer. Yes its a croc but luckily this one is happy lying where it is permanently. Contrast this to the story I read on air yesterday . A crocodile walks into a service station …no this is not a joke – check this story below.
