Pied Butcher Birds – A delightful musicality.

For many years I have listened to the song of a particular bird and wondered what it was. There are apps these days that might give you the answer but what happened today was infinitely preferable. As I was out on the back deck feeding Dilli Darel, a family of handsome birds came to the lilly pilly. They all started singing and suddenly I realised this was their song – this is the Pied Butcher Bird which is said to have one of the most beautiful bird songs in Australia. It is native to Australia and first described by John Gould in 1837. It is a most accomplished singer.

Here it is – a pied butcher bird and its family.

While we are here – some updates for you. The possums are neat eaters.

An orange segment cleaned out of all the flesh. Skin left behind!
Dilli Darel is growing fast and follows me around in the garden.
A new lanky friend cosying up to my picture as a little girl.
At this point I had to rescue him before he did a kamikaze leap onto the floor.
